Other Venues for Beijing 2008 Olympic GamesExisting and Temporary Sports Facilities in Various Chinese Cities
Besides the newly-constructed sports facilities in Beijing, many other existing and temporary competition venues are needed for a successful Summer Olympics.
For the Beijing Olympics, in addition to the 12 newly-constructed sports facilities, there are 11 existing and eight temporary competition venues in Beijing. The existing venues have been upgraded and retrofitted to meet the requirements set by the International Olympic Council. The successful re-adaptation of these facilities gives them a new lease of life. On the other hand, the temporary facilities are set up solely for the duration of the Olympics Games, and will be put to other land uses in future. Existing Venues in BeijingThe Olympic Sports Center (OSC) is located in the Chaoyang District. The OSC Stadium will host the football preliminary matches and the modern pentathlon (running and equestrian) events. The handball events will be held in the OSC Gymnasium, while the water polo matches and modern pentathlon (swimming) events will be held in the OSC Yingdong Natatorium. Another sports complex within the Chaoyang District is the Beijing Workers’ Stadium and Beijing Workers’ Gymnasium, both located along Gongti Lu. The former venue will host the football preliminary matches while the latter will host the boxing competitions. Four sports facilities are located in the Haidian District. Both Capital Indoor Stadium and Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium will be used for the volleyball competitions. The shooting events will be held at the Beijing Shooting Range Clay Target Field, while the weightlifting competitions will be held at the Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics Gymnasium. In the Fengtai District, the softball events will be held at the Fengtai Sports Center Softball Field. Last but not least, the cycling (mountain bike) events will be held at the Laoshan Mountain Bike Course, located in the Shijingshan District. Temporary Venues in BeijingHalf of the temporary sports facilities are located in the Olympic Green. These include the following:
The Olympic Green, located at the northern end of the central axis of Beijing, contains 11 out of the 37 Games competition venues. Besides the three existing OSC venues and four temporary venues stated above, there are four newly-constructed sports facilities, namely, the National Stadium, National Aquatics Center, National Indoor Stadium and the Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Center. In addition to the competition venues, the Olympic Village, Main Press Center, the International Broadcasting Center and a forest park can all be found in the Olympic Green. It will be well served by several subway stations connecting it to downtown Beijing. Outside of the Olympic Green, the remaining four temporary venues are:

The Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center is newly-constructed to host the various sailing competitions. The Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Venue is an existing facility located at Beas River and Shatin. It will host the equestrian (jumping and dressage) events. The football preliminary matches will be held at the Qinhuangdao Olympic Sports Center Stadium, Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium, Shanghai Stadium and the Shenyang Olympic Stadium. The first two competition venues are newly constructed, while the latter two are existing venues.
