2008 US Olympic BMX TeamKyle Bennett, Mike Day, Donny Robinson and Jill Kintner to CompeteBMX, also known as bicycle motocross, will be making its debut at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Three men and one woman make up the US team.
Sports fans across the world are gearing up for the start of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Beijing, China will be hosting the Olympics this year. This is the first time that China has hosted the Olympics and this is also the first time that bicycle motocross (BMX) will make an official appearance in the Olympics. The United States BMX team will be competing in individual events at the Laoshan venues in the Shijingshan District. Kyle BennettA native of Conroe, Texas, Kyle Bennett was the first of two men’s automatic qualifiers for the 2008 United States Olympic BMX Team. Bennett won the World BMX Championship in 2002, 2003 and 2007. In addition, Bennett has a host of other first place finishes in BMC events throughout the nation. Bennett’s inspiration is his stepfather, John Purse. Purse is a well-known name in the BMX world and is a former BMX professional. Mike Day The second men’s automatic qualifier for this year’s BMX team is Mike Day. Day earned his automatic entry by winning the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials which took place in June 2008. Day is a resident of Santa Clarita, California and is a member of the GT/Red Bull team. Coming from a family with a strong BMX history, Mike Day first became a household name in 2004 after placing in the X Games. Donny Robinson Although Donny Robinson wasn’t an automatic qualifier for the event, he was chosen for the 2008 US Olympic BMX Team based on his strong BMX competition history. Robinson has a string of first and second place finishes in events going back to 2001 when he was the Junior World Champion. According to the bio sheet on Robinson, “A former competitive gymnast for eight years, Donny credits his former sport for building his upper-body and leg strength, as well as teaching him how to crash.” Jill KintnerSeattle, Washington resident Jill Kintner is the only female to be competing for the United States in the 2008 Olympic BMX event. Kintner was ranked first by USA Cycling in the BMX category for 2008 and earned an automatic spot on the team. In 1997, Kintner started her national championship history earning the title of UCI BMX Junior World Champion. These four BMX superstars will be representing the United States in the upcoming Olympic Games. BMX is a popular sport in the US and other countries.
